Mathew Howden

Profile

Mathew acts for domestic and international insurers, providing coverage advice and litigating coverage disputes. Drawing on his experience in private practice and as in-house counsel, he advises on a broad range of policies, including commercial general liability, directors’ and officers’ liability, professional errors and omissions, employment practices liability, automobile, property, and builders’ risk.

Called to the Ontario bar in 2019, Mathew has a strong background in insurance litigation and has represented insurers and their insureds in hundreds of complex actions. Prior to joining DWF, he practised at a boutique insurance defence firm, where he became a partner, and later served as in-house counsel with a national insurer. His litigation experience includes coverage disputes, subrogation & recovery, fraud, and complex tort claims involving occupiers’ liability, contractors’ liability, hospitality, motor vehicle accidents, municipal liability, and product liability. He has appeared before all levels of court in Ontario.

Outside of his practice, Mathew enjoys staying active, live music, and making the most of his time outdoors with his dog.
