Simon Sigler

Profile

Simon is an associate whose practice focuses on Indigenous and Commercial litigation matters. Simon has appeared before the Federal Court, the Federal Court of Appeal, all levels of court in Ontario, and the Courts of King’s Bench in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Simon has appeared as lead counsel at the Supreme Court of Canada.

Outside of Canada, Simon has appeared before the Civilian Board of Contract Appeals in the United States of America.

Simon’s Indigenous practice involves advancing treaty claims, land claims, environmental claims, and treaty benefits claims.  Simon’s experience extends both to advancing claims through the courts, the Specific Claims Process and Tribunal, and through a Ministerial Special Representative. In addition, Simon has noted experience in governance litigation including judicial review of Chief and Council decisions, election appeals, and removals of Chiefs and Councillors.

Other notable experience includes representing a mine designer on the construction of a multi-billion-dollar greenfield potash mine, representing a contractor on the construction of a carbon capture facility, “bet-the-company” litigation, oppression and derivative actions, and several other contract disputes. Simon has also defended complex fraud and failed investments disputes with over twenty parties to a single proceeding.

Lastly, Simon has extensive public law experience with particular attention to judicial reviews, administrative law, and appeals.

Simon is also the co-author of two chapters, Rule 16 – Service of Documents and Rule 17 – Service Outside of Ontario, in the Canadian Legal Information Institute’s (CanLII) textbook Civil Practice and Procedure in Ontario.

Outside of work Simon enjoys his time cheering on his Kansas City Chiefs and is currently pursuing his private pilot’s license at the Calgary Flying Club.
